As a tourist State, unfortunately, many folks who come to Florida on vacation leave on probation. It is just as easy to get in trouble on vacation as it is at home (in fact for many it is even easier with a lack of structure, lack of familiarity and perhaps a lack of better judgment), but if you get in trouble here and you are from another State (or even another county in Florida) then you will have to deal with your case locally (criminal cases do not transfer from State to State or even from County to County and must be dealt with in the location where they occur).

Still, in many instances a local lawyer can not only help you to deal with you case but also to do so in your absence. In Florida there are Rules of Criminal procedure in place which permit the Defendant to ask the Court for permission to have her/his lawyer handle the case “in absentia”. While there is no similar provision in the Criminal Code for felony cases, still, in many instances, a skilled and experienced criminal defense lawyer can move your case along in your absence without the need for you to appear.
