The scene: Saturday, January 17th, 2015 at “Kroger” on North Main Street in London:
The situation: Store loss prevention officers caught an unnamed man attempting to steal baby formula for his six (6) month old son, detained him, called the London Police Department in Kentucky and Justin Roby, a London detective, responded.
The deal: After determining the facts and circumstances surrounding the offense Store Security agreed not to press charges and Detective Roby took it upon himself to purchase the baby formula for the unnamed father.
Detective Roby decided to help the man after he determined that he was a single father who was desperate to feed his six (6) month old son. Detective Roby said that “Me citing him for court wouldn’t have done any good for him. He’s already short on money, can’t afford formula, so me making him appear in court, he’s still not going to have any food for that baby. As a police officer, it’s not black and white for us. There’s a lot of gray. And you have to cipher through everything and you really need to figure out the whole story. You put yourself in the situations. I think, “Well, what if me and my son, what if this was us?” I think when [a lot of people] look at us, they see just the uniform and just the car, just the tools that we have on our belt, but behind the uniform, I’m a human being and I’m a person out in this community just like any of them. I have a little boy. I’m a father just like that gentleman was. We’re not these robots, There’s a human behind the badge.”
Memo to Detective Roby: Well said Sir. Very well said. Folks sometimes forget that in all walks of life, in all jobs, professions, careers there are some truly “good”, some truly “bad” and some “shaDes of grey” seeds.
Memo to the Folks (and especially to “cop bashers”): See above. Not withstanding your experience, thoughts or beliefs, NOT ALL COPS ARE “BAD”. I’ve been in this game – the criminal justice system – for 23+ years and have met all kinds… JUST AS the cops that I’ve come into contact with have met all kinds of defense lawyers, and the same holds true for prosecutors and Judges. Some are just douchebags through and through, others are conscientious and kind and most are, well, shares of grey. Stereotyping all cops as “bad” is not only inaccurate but it’s juvenile and ignorant.
