Q:     Can I become a congressman with an expunged juvenile record?  I was arrested on misdemeanor drug possession charges at age 17. I was told I was eligible for Teen Court. I was told that after paying my debt to society (6 months drug testing, community service hours, and a jail tour) my juvenile record would be expunged. I finished the program successfully.  Will I be able to become a congressman at 25? I want to pursue a political career. I don’t even know how to check whether my records were expunged, but I went through Teen Court in Florida.

Answered This is America.

So long as you are a citizen you can bee elected to any public office if enough people vote for you.

GW Bush was arrested (twice) in college for pranks that ran afoul. It is also documented that he was arrested for DUI in Maine in the early 1980’s.

John Kerry has an arrest record from protesting the Vietnam War.

Ulysses S. Grant was arrested while in office:As President, Grant was himself an honest man. When he was arrested for speeding around Washington D.C. in a horse and buggy, he told the police officer, “Do your duty, my good man,” and eventually paid a fine.

Please see:

Following is a long (perhaps not so prestigious) list of American federal politicians who had been convicted of crimes.

On the other hand please see:

That said, while juvenile records are generally confidential, unfortunately, it is probably a safe bet to assume that if you were arrested anytime in the digital age then your criminal record will almost certainly remain with you forever. To some degree or another this is true even if you ultimately seal or expunge a case (adult or juvenile).  All adult arrests are matters of public record, and, even if they are subsequently removed from the public record they still remain alive and well in various private records.  This is one down-side to technology. You have a better shot at the “kiddie case” remaining under the radar, but I would not count on it.

I hope that I have been helpful in answering your question.
