Osceola County, Florida homeowners have been horrified after at least 3 families have found dead catfish left in their yards and inside their mailboxes.
Maddison Fertic (pictured below) became aware that a dead, 12″ catfish had been left inside of her mailbox on Monday, February 1st, 2016 after a mailman noticed it while he was on delivery.
Maddison, who initially thought that the catfish was alive, used a stick to pull the catfish out of her mailbox before putting it in the trash.
Maddison thought that she was a random victim of mischief but then she came to learn that two other residents also found dead catfish at their homes, one in the mailbox and the other on the street in front of their St. Cloud home.
Maddison went on record stating that “I was kind of in shock that somebody would do that. It’s not something you hear of every day. I was honestly in shock because it doesn’t make any sense. It’s just one of those things where it’s, just, ‘Why?'”. While she reportedly hoped that the incident was just “kids trying to be funny” Maddison also reportedly said that “It starts with the catfish in the mailbox, but then it starts with breaking into a car. You never know where things escalate to.”
In Florida criminal mischief with damages less than $1,000.00 is a 1st degree misdemeanor offense punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $1,000.00 fine. If the damages exceed $1,000.00 then its a 3rd degree felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $5,000.00 fine. However, when it comes to mailboxes, even residential ones, they are considered federal property, for each act of vandalism to a mailbox a violator faces 3 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000.00 fine.
