I wish that I could introduce you to 56 y/o Michael Casteel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota but I just can’t find a picture of the guy. Still, after reading many, many accounts I have to guess that Casteel looks (and thinks) something like this…
Casteel earned Sioux Falls fame after a fire had broken out in an apartment building at around 12.30pm on Sunday, April 22nd, 2017.
It reportedly took responding fire department personnel about 10 minutes to put out the flames and, during that time, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue first responders were busy treating resident on the scene, including three people who were injured in the blaze, one of whom had to be taken to Avera McKennan Hospital to be treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
But not Casteel. During the pandemonium police report that Casteel pushed past officers and firefighters in an effort to repeatedly re-enter the burning multifamily residence. And why was Casteel so insistent on going into the smoldering building? To save his child? To save his pet? To save his heirlooms? Nope… Casteel defied Fire and Police personnel’s repeated orders to save what he held most dear: Two cans of Bud Ice Premium, and Casteel did emerge from the house carrying two cans of Bud Ice Premium…
but after suffering the heat of the smouldering home Casteel didn’t have an opportunity to crack a cold one; as, for the love of beer Casteel’s valiant acts got him arrested on two counts of obstruction of justice and booked into the Minnehaha, SD County Jail.
A spokesperson for the Sioux Falls Police Department reportedly slammed Casteel’s suds-saving heroics as an instance of “poor judgment”.
Memo to the Folks continued: In Florida there is no crime called “Obstruction of Justice”. Instead, in FL “Obstruction of Justice” is an umbrella term that refers to a group of crimes that all fall under the common category of offenses that are known as obstruction of justice. The most commonly charged obstruction of justice crimes (and for you OCD types I am listing them in alphabetical order) are: Accessory After the Fact (see F.S. 777.03) Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer (see F.S. 784.07) Disobeying a Lawful Order by Law Enforcement (see F.S. 316.072(3)) Falsely Impersonating an Officer (see F.S. 843.08) Escape (see F.S. 944.40) Harassing a Witness (see F.S. 914.22(3)) Introduction of Contraband into a Correctional Facility (see F.S. 951.22 and F.S. 944.47) Perjury (see Chapter 837 F.S.) Providing False Information in Bail Application (see F.S. 903.035) Resisting Officer With Violence (see F.S. 843.01) Resisting Officer Without Violence (see F.S. 843.02) Tampering with Evidence (see F.S. 918.13) and Tampering with a Witness (see F.S. 914.22(1)).
