Police were reportedly tipped off about the ad / sale after another couple had noticed the listing and called cops. Officers reportedly had initially assumed the ad was some sort of a fraud or sick joke but, once they initiated an undercover sting op with local and state police supported by the FBI they quickly discovered that the couple were in fact being sincere in their attempts to sell their infant child.
And so an undercover officer made contact with the couple and agreed to a location for the sale and transfer.
Per Sheriff Pat Kankins of Green County, TN: “They were wanting to sell their five month old baby for $3,000. The people walked up to them pushing a baby carriage and had a baby in it, a five-month-old little boy, and sold it to the undercover agent. We were anticipating more of a scam or someone was fixing to rob someone. Putting the value of life of just $3,000 on a baby it’s as shocking news to you as it is to me, it’s just unbelievable.” But it is far from the first time that this has happened…
Because no “sale” ever occurred Deanna and John were not charged with any sort of human trafficking charge but they were both arrested for aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect or endangerment and, presumably due to the henious nature of their act, they are reportedly being held in jail on a bail bond of $150,000. Memo to Deanna Lynn Greer and John David Cain:
