An unnamed Tempe, AZ couple who reside in the San Sonoma apartment complex with their daughters, the older aged 2 years and the younger aged 2 months, awoke to the scare of their lives at about 2:30 am on Thursday, December 15th, 2016.
After hearing a little girl’s cries just after 2:30 am the girl’s mother got up to check on her, but found that her daughter’s bedroom door was closed, which she thought was strange. The girl’s father then went into the bedroom to find a man, later identified as 34 y/o Oren Cohen, standing in the bedroom with the girl in his arms.
Not surprisingly, a fight broke out when the father wrestled with Cohen to secure his daughter, and in the interim the mother dialed 911, advising emergency services that her husband was fighting with a burglar. Cohen managed to wriggle himself free and flee, but just a little too late (from his perspective), as cops were just then pulling up and spotted him fleeing. (No, that’s not our hero below… it’s just an illustration.)
Per Sgt. Josie Montenegro of the Tempe PD: “We were pulling in as the suspect was running away from the apartment. He was ultimately tasered before being taken into custody.” Officers arrested Cohen on suspicion of burglary and aggravated assault.
The unnamed parents are trying to understand how the man, identified as was even able to get into their home, let alone grab their toddler girl. The couple told police that they had never seen Cohen before that evening, there were no signs of a forced entry and it still remains a mystery as to why Cohen was holding the toddler. Per Sgt. Montenegro: “We’re still going to continue our investigation to figure out what the suspect’s intent was.”
