KY Police Officer’s DashCam Video Captures the Moment that a Deer is Struck by the Officer’s Squad Car, is sent Spinning in the Air, Lands and Scurries Off into the Woods Dashcam footage captured a… Scroll down to read more!

Dashcam footage captured a Kentucky police officer’s patrol car striking a deer.  The deer, who may be part cat, was sent spinning in the air, landed on it’s feet and then scurried off into the woods.

In the video (which you can see by clicking here), Officer Pittaluga of the Kenton County Police Department, is seen driving down the road before a deer runs into his path from the left and is hit.

As the deer performs a triple axle across the windshield of the car the officer hits his brakes and steers away from the animal which manages to quickly get up and head off into the woods.

Although his cruiser sustained minor damage Officer Pittagula was not injured in the incident.  The Kenton County Police Department posted the video on it’s Facebook page (which you can access by clicking here) and stated that Officer Pittagula “maintained his control throughout the entire incident, even when the large (but apparently agile and acrobatically trained) deer flew across the hood of the cruiser.” They went on to say that: “We did place a call to Santa just to be sure this deer didn’t belong to him (we would hate to end up on the naughty list).  He was quick to point out that he employs reindeer and that, although this deer did appear to fly, it was not a reindeer (we still aren’t clear whether we will be making the nice list or not).”

When the video went viral (at present it has more than 2,500,000 views) they posted the following explanation:

“When we posted the video of a collision between one of our cruisers and a deer, we anticipated that the video would draw more attention than many of our posts.
We posted the video with a purpose in mind. We wanted to highlight the safety message that vehicle collisions, whether involving animals, people, other vehicles, or other things, can happen in the blink of an eye. In 2014 alone, there were over 3,000 collisions between vehicles and deer in Kentucky. As a result of those crashes, 115 people suffered injuries and three people died. We wanted to show that a controlled and safe reaction while driving can potentially mitigate the severity of a collision.

The Kenton County Police Department uses social media to engage the community we serve. We post safety tips, warnings about road closures, requests for assistance in identifying suspects, pleas for help in finding missing or runaway kids, and, from time to time, posts to remind everyone that police are human beings with a sense of humor. We allow comments on those posts and, aside from the language filters provided by Facebook, we generally do not censor public comments on our posts. We will, however, delete any comment that is criminal or is designed to incite criminal activity.

Please know that comments by others on our page are not necessarily reflective of the views or values of our agency or any of the officers or civilians we employ.

Just as we did before the internet even existed, the officers of the Kenton County Police Department are committed to serving our community with integrity and respect each and every day. The words of our mission aren’t just words on a poster, they are the motivation our officers carry with them from the moment they take the oath to serve the great community we are privileged to serve here in Kenton County.”

Memo to Law Enforcement:   Especially in today’s twisted times, but always, all law enforcement agencies should strive to have the best possible public relations. What ever you call them (civilians, citizens, the folks) it is critical that those who don’t wear the badge do not harbor negative feelings for those that do.  Memo to the Kenton County Police Department:   That was a social media win.  Well done!
