Meet Layla, a 12 year old rescue pit bull (that’s her below)…
And meet Alice Woodruff, Waterbury, Connecticut homeowner, mother of 2, rescuer and BFF Layla the pit bull, former mental health staffer and victim of man-gone-cra-cra &(hat’s her below)…
Unfortunately I do not have a picture of her 22 y/o assailant, but here’s what happened:
On Thursday, October 23rd, 2014 Layla was tethered to the porch with an 800 pound tow chain, as she usually is, when she heard Layla yelping loud enough to grab her attention. Alice walked outside to see a man laying prostrate under her dog and thought the worst, that Layla had attacked someone; but, upon closer inspection what she discovered was much more disturbing than that.
The man was laying prostrate, naked, in a circle of his discarded clothing, was having sex with 12 y/o Layla. Her immediate reaction was to throw a nearby citronella candle at the man yelling fore him to “get off my dog, you have to get outta here”; but the dog rapist, who turns out to be one of her neighbors, wasn’t thwarted, instead replying “No. Today is the day that we are going to spend our lives together”, and with that he got up and was described as “prancing around the yard in the buff and making incoherent statements such as “Today is the day”, “I am the Anti-Christ and you’re going to die with me”, “I am ISIS”, “I have Ebola” and “I gave your dog ebola”. At that point Alice ran inside her house and grabbed her gun.
When she returned, leveling her gun at him, he said that “This is the plan, we are going to die to day in a massacre”. At that Alice fired a warning shot in the ground by his foot, but the same did nothing to deter her psychotic neighbor. In fact, after the warning shot the dog rapist advanced toward Alice, arms outstretched and urging her to kill him, but warning that as soon as he died everyone would follow. This both prompted Alice to think that the lunatic may actually have a bomb or some weapon of mass destruction and to curb her fire.
Alice was simultaneously scared for her life and compassionate for her mentally disturbed neighbor. She states that her recurring thought was “Lord, don;t let me shoot him… Don’t let me take someone’s life”. So she didn’t and the man crept into the bushes, where he was spotted lurking by a responding police officer. When ordered to step forward the cop describes his actions as “bolting like a gazelle and running off barefoot”.
The man was captured 2 hours later, hospitalized and faces charges of animal cruelty, sexual assault and a breach of the peace (note that in FL burglary and assault charges likely would have been tacked on as well).
Alice was shaken, but not stirred, and Layla is reported to be doing fine, although she is on an antibiotic regiment just in case.
Apart from saying that crazy is as crazy does, I cannot put it any better than Dame Judi Dench no doubt would say:
