Why was this almost senior citizen arrested? One (1) word…. P-E-R-J-U-R-Y.
Seems ‘ole Jimmy had amassed more than thirty (30) lawsuits claiming to be disabled, including one (1) which sought food stamps for his service dog, pleaded guilty to perjury for claiming under oath that he couldn’t walk or hold a glass of water. Yet, apparently, Jimmy could paint…
apply varnish…
mend the fence…
blow out the gutters…
mow the lawn…
and even fold up his wheelchair and toss it in the back of the SUV…
and all of this coming from a guy who had claimed he hadn’t been properly served with court papers because he couldn’t pick up documents left at his door.
Over the past few decades Jimmy, an unemployed veteran, has sued municipalities, public officials and various businesses claiming that his many physical disabilities haven’t been accommodated. In an effort to qualify his dog as a household member for the purposes of getting food stamps Jimmy reportedly filed a lawsuit claiming that his dog ate the same food as him and therefore should have qualified as a dependent who is eligible for food stamps. Not surprisingly nearly all of Jimmy’s lawsuits have been thrown out of court, but his last one may well cost him his freedom.
The purportedly disabled Jimmy had been caught by investigators engaging in all of the tasks pictured above (i.e. standing on a ladder, pushing a wheelbarrow, using a power saw, etc.) his convictions for perjury and forgery stemmed from his having submitted a bogus invoice against a tree company that he was suing. After being convicted Jimmy was permitted to leave the courtroom in his wheelchair and he now faces sentencing in sixty (60) days after a psychological evaluation.
Memo to the Folks: It may not be sexy like murder or robbery or glamorous like drug trafficking or burglary, but perjury is a very serious offense. In Florida “perjury” is a 3rd degree felony punishable by 5 years in state prison.
