Times Square… perhaps the most famous strip of land on the planet….
Millions of folks pass through. Some are going to shows, some in awe of the sheer magnificence, some are simply passing through and many are dropping dollars on a variety of panhandlers… er, “street performers”….
Enter Junior Bishop. That’s him below…
Junior is a 26 y/o “street performer” who lurks about Times Square donning Marvel super hero costumes and panhandling pictures for cash…. that is when he’s not on the attack, demanding more money from tourists or resisting cops with violence…
The picture above is Junior, dressed as “your {allegedly} friendly neighborhood Spiderman” in July, 2014, when Junior was arrested for assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief. The contact between Junior and NY cop in question occurred after the cop intervened in a dispute between Spidey and a tourist. Junior had words with the tourist after posing for a picture when the tourist gave him $1.00 and he (Junior) demanded $5.00. The officer intervened, asked Junior for some identification, and when Bishop failed to produce any the officer moved to arrest him. However, Junior broke free and punched the officer in the face, causing a cut and eye swelling (you can watch some of the July, 2014 incident, along with color commentary, by clicking here).
Fast forward to November 30, 2015 and Junior was at it again, although this time he chose a more malevolent tempered super hero (after all Spidey goes out of his way to always be a “good guy”)…
Memo to Junior Bishop: If you want to be a man who relies upon the people for a living, then you are going to have to learn deal with a few cheap ones. I have no statistics to back this up but I’d have to guess that more folks will pay you the $5.00 than $1.00, especially if you tell them the price in advance, and I’d wager that it is a small percentage that will try to skunk you all together. Regardless, all businesses have write-offs, and yours is no different. So be a smart businessman. Be up front and honest with the folks, take a pass on those who don’t want to pony up the fin-sky and never, ever go at it with the cops. That is a lose lose proposition for you. You go to jail, you do not make money and you morph from super hero to super douche bag instantaneously.
