Like anything else, social media has its pluses and minuses, but one thing that can’t be denied is that it can be a very powerful tool.
Meet 45 year old Katharine F. Lemansky. That’s her mug shot below…
On November 27th, 2015, Lemansky, who is known on Facebook as “Katie Brown of South Daytona, Florida”, posted the picture below…
The picture prompted an immediate and ferocious public outcry, as well as a flood of messages which were reportedly sent to officials, from literally thousands of people nationwide. The photo, of “Brown”, a chocolate Labrador-mix, with silver duct tape all around her muzzle, had the caption: “This is what happens when you dont shut up!!!”
The photo it was shared more than 45,000 times in 14 hours and, not withstanding plenty of criticism, Lemansky refused to take it down. In fact Lemansky chose to double down and defend her actions in the thread. When one of her Facebook friends begged her to reassure people that she did not actually tape the dog’s mouth, Lemansky wrote: “I cant lie i did it for sixty seconds. It was time out and no more barking.” Other Facebook users threatened to report her to the police, and per South Daytona Police chief Ron Wright, some people on Facebook were even making death threats. Still, and despite the criticism, Lemansky defiantly kept the photo up, even following up with another post, saying, “Dont panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasn’t barked since… POINT MADE!!!”
Mimi Perez, the telecommunications supervisor for the South Daytona Police Department reported that they had received calls about Lemansky’s dog “from 44 states, three provinces, and as far away as Australia”, leading to quick investigative work and finding that Lemansky had not lived in South Daytona Beach for about a year and a half and had moved to Avon, Connecticut. When South Daytona police contacted Avon police they determined that Lemansky had already moved on to Cary, North Carolina, where Lemansky was in fact located (along with her several dogs, including Brown).
Per Cary, North Carolina Police Captain Randall Rhyne: “Taping the dog’s muzzle shut was a terrible decision on Ms. Lemansky’s part, and charging her with animal cruelty under North Carolina law was the right thing to do.” Chief Rhyne stated that it was also important to note that animal control officers who physically examined the dog and her litter mates found them all to be very well cared for, which is why none of the dogs, including Brown, were removed from Lemansky’s care and control. Per Chief Rhyne: “The dogs are currently on their shots, spayed, and microchipped. They are clean and well-nourished and appear to be comfortable in their surroundings. And there were no signs of injury to Brown’s muzzle, not even detectable hair loss.” Still, because she admitted that the taping occurred in Cary she was arrested and charged with animal cruelty (a misdemeanor which carries a potential 150 day jail sentence).
Memo to Katharine F. Lemansky: I don’t know what you do for a living but whatever it is don’t quit it in order to pursue a career in the comic arts, because you absolutely suck as a comedian. Your sense of humor is f’ing warped. You are right up there with these winners….
Memo to the Folks: Props to the Folks who went out of their way to call out this douche baggerous conduct and to help chase down this ass clown. This case is a clear example of a social media WIN!
