No, Juliette is not a unicorn. But that didn’t stop what has been referred to as a “flurry” of 911 calls coming into the California Highway Patrol reporting that there was a unicorn on the loose near a busy road south of Madera, CA. Per CHP Officer Josh McConnell: “The calls were coming in as a unicorn running around out there on the roadway” and led to a three hour police search for the mythical creature, which included a CHP helicopter.
In reality, Juliette, who is reportedly “owned” by five year-old Tatum Boos (pictured below), entertains at kid’s birthday parties, and when she does she often impersonates a unicorn by donning a horn on her head as she poses for pictures with children.
According to Tatum’s mother, Sandra Boos, Juliette had been out entertaining kids at a birthday party when she got spooked and made a break for it. Sandra explained that Juliette “was running amok in a couple of orchards with some white blooms, so she kind of blended in with the scenery as well. And she’s not real tall, so she turned out to be stealthier than we imagined.” It took the combination of another horse (“Shady” who is a “friend” of Juliette) and the CHP helicopter’s spotlight to secure Juliette in police custody. Per Sandra Boos: “I think as tense as the situation was, I think it was the comedic relief that was needed at the time. And I laughed and I cried and I thanked God.”
