Airport TSA security checkpoints: We all pretty much hate them because they are slow, arduous, unpleasant, oftentimes incompetently staffed, generally incompetently run… but there’s a whole new reason to be pissed off at the Department of Homeland Security’s black sheep…
Over the past seven (7) years airline passengers traveling through TSA checkpoints have left more than $4,300,000.00 in loose change / coins when using plastic trays to scan their items… and the TSA gets to keep all that booty!
More than $765,000.00 was left behind in 2015, and the funds, which are collected by TSA agents, are increasing with each passing year (2015 recorded almost double the amount of cash found at airports across the US in 2008).
In an act of brilliance (and charity), some airports, such as those in Phoenix, AZ, Columbus, Ohio, and Denver International Airport, offer travelers the opportunity to donate their spare change to local charities at collection boxes which are situated just outside of the TSA checkpoints.
Memo to the Folks (** Warning – Unsolicited editorial coming **): Personally I think that the TSA is a joke, and a bad joke at that. They have an abysmal failure rate on catching explosive and weapons (95%-96% failure rate – click here for a source) and they have an almost 100% success rate in pissing off air travelers. It’s insulting enough that I help fund this incompetent group of law enforcement flunky wanna-bes with tax dollars (a matter over which I have no control), so the last thing I would do is to give them my hard earned money. Props to those airports who provide an option to collect loose change for folks who need, and who deserve, charity.
