Democratic Louisiana Governor Signs First in the Nation “Blue Lives Matter” Bill making LA the first State in the US to make Targeting Police Officers and First Responders a Hate Crime Louisiana has now become… Scroll down to read more!

Louisiana has now become the first State in the nation to expand its hate-crime laws to protect police, firefighters and emergency medical crews.

Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards, whose family includes four generations of sheriffs, signed the Bill into law on Thursday stating that it protects “men and women who put their lives on the line every day.  Coming from a family of law enforcement officers, I have great respect for the work that they do and the risks they take to ensure our safety.”

As in ever other State (and on a federal level), Louisiana law already provides for increased penalties when police are attacked, but under the new “Blue Lives Matter” Law Louisiana State Prosecutors can now seek even stronger penalties when first responders are intentionally targeted “because of their professions”.  People convicted of felony hate crimes in Louisiana face an additional five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine, and penalties increase by $500 or up to six months in prison in misdemeanor cases.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures similar Blue Lives Matter bills have recently stalled in five other states, and a federal Blue Lives Matter Act is presently being considered in Congress.  But these measures are reportedly receiving a great deal of blow back from some, including the Anti-Defamation League and several outspoken “Black Lives Matter” advocates, who essentially claim that “Blue Lives Matter” laws will dilute the importance of minority based hate crime laws at a time when minorities already feel under-protected.

Personally I’m calling “BS” on the anti-Blue Lives Matter activists claims.

This is not to say that Black (or any other) Lives don’t matter, nor is to say that police should not be held accountable for acts of unjustified use of force (in fact I agree wholeheartedly with Jon Stewart in this regard…)

But it is to say that “All Lives Matter”…

Well, “Most Lives Matter”…

The bottom line, for me, is to extend props to Louisiana.  They finally got something right.
