Dorota has been branded the ‘bunny hoarder’. She faces trial on charges of animal abuse, allegedly torturing and injuring rabbits, having been accused of keeping over 200 rabbits in what was described as being a “filthy junkyard” in Gowanus, NY. Dorota is also accused of using the animals in an experiment to attempt to breed the pets with blue and pastel colored fur.
During a pre-trial hearing Dorota, who represents herself, reportedly (foolishly) got into it with Brooklyn Criminal Court Judge Marguerite Dougherty, clashing over points of law. Dorota reportedly told Judge Dougherty that she would not appear for any future court dates, and when the Judge made it clear the case would proceed in her absence Dorota reportedly began yelling, called the Judge a “crazy weirdo” and described the case as a “corruption against rabbits”. Dorota reportedly shouted: “It’s a mafia, it’s a corruption against these rabbits. This case could go even to Washington. There’s substantial violation of due process, and corruption. And the mafia. These people are thieves. They took the rabbits without a warrant. Thieves, trespassers, mafia and ignorant.”
Dorota first came to the attention of the authorities when officials raided her yard finding 200 rabbits. They reported that some of the rabbits were suffering from diseases including syphilis, and many reportedly had bite wounds from fighting each other. The rabbits were seized by police and animal welfare authorities in January, 2015 and Dorota was arrested shortly thereafter, with prosecutors demanding that she either pay for their care in city facilities (to the tune of about $40,000) or that she sign over ownership. In turn Dorota has accused authorities of wrongful arrest, trespassing, defamation, harassment and wrongful seizure.
Apparently all of this stemmed from an animal rights activist named Natalie Reeves who ratted Dorota out to authorities. Naturally Dorota is suing Reeves for $2 billion for saying that the animals were kept in a “filthy junkyard”. I could only find two (2) pictures, neither of which seems to obviously match the description…
Dorota seems to like the bunny in the picture below, and the bunny doesn’t seem to mind her too much either….
But what do I know? Actually I do know 2 things: 1) It’s never a good idea to get into a pissing match with your Judge; and 2) It’s an ever worse idea to self-represent in court, especially criminal court. If you don’t believe me then just ask Honest Abe…
