And here she is being placed in the back of a Milwaukee County, WI Sheriff’s Squad Car after being arrested for her 3rd DUI.
Now I know that it comes to no surprise to many of you that people fail, for any of a number – or combination – of reasons to learn their lesson after DUI arrest #1, but it’s a sad fact that DUI recidivism is alive, well and foreseeable (which is why DUI laws are so freaking tough… and seemingly unfair to the bilk of the folks who do, in fact, learn their lesson and are truly “one and done”). But I digress… let’s get back to Carrie:
The think that makes Carrie newsworthy is why she was stopped in the first place… On Thursday, May 4th, 2017, at about 2:30 pm, Deputy Whitney Hendon (pictured below) observed Carrie’s car, a Mazda CX-9, being driven southbound on state Highway 145.
Deputy Hendon was suspicious because the car was being driven in a strange manner: “The motions were jerky like she was turning but looking at something else. It wasn’t something a typical driver would do.” And so Deputy Hendon pulled up along side of the vehicle and that’s when she observed a child seated on the driver’s lap, and it appeared to the Deputy that the child was steering the vehicle (as an aide, neither Carrie nor the boy were wearing seat belts). This prompted a traffic stop (and no, that is neither Carrie nor her 8 y/o son below… it’s just an illustration).
Per Deputy Hendon, upon inquiry Carrie “stated there was no one who operated the car other than her. That’s when the small child began to cry. He said, “I don’t want to go to jail.”” Carrie was reportedly uncooperative with Deputy Hendon prior to the arrival of her supervisor, and subsequent video from another patrol car’s dash camera showed Carrie stumbling while performing and failing a field sobriety test (yes, that is Carrie being given the HGN – horizontal gaze nystagmus test below).
Be smart{er than Carrie L. Bernard}: Don’t drink and drive, but, if you do, just say “NO{thing}”, don’t blow (in FL your 2nd subsequent refusal is a crime) and call me stat at 305-381-8686, 305-798-2220 or 1-888-SHARK-8-1.
