Can I Catch My Own Lobster in FL?

Yes. You are free to catch, cook and consume your own lobster in FL, but you have to follow the rules, and there are a lot of them.
First, you need a valid saltwater fishing license with a valid lobster endorsement.
Second, you need to be sure that lobster is in season. In FL lobster season is always August 6 – March 31, and there is always a 2 day mini-season just prior to the start of regular season, but the mini-season dates change from year to year.
Third, you need to make sure that you do not use any unlawful means to catch your lobster. You can “tickle” them out of a hole but you cannot spear them or net them or use chemicals to coax them out.
Fourth you need to be sure that you are in an area where catching lobster is permitted. There are many sanctuaries and protected areas and even though they are not all clearly marked you are responsible for knowing where they are.
Fifth you need to be mindful of the size and the sex of the lobster. Regardless of their size, egg-bearing lobster can never be caught and non-egg-bearing lobster must have a carapice larger then 3″.
Finally you can never, ever “wring” you lobster until you are on land. All lobsters must be kept whole while you are on the water.
