All traffic tickets look alike but they can be very different. The main differences between civil infractions and criminal traffic citations are two-fold: 1) in the former your adversary is a cop whereas in the latter your adversary is an Assistant State Attorney and 2) in the former your exposure is limited to fines, court costs, driving school, points and possible insurance hikes whereas in the latter your exposure includes jail time and a permanent criminal conviction.
Examples of civil infractions are running a stop sign, general speeding and defective equipment. Examples of criminal traffic matters are DUI, Reckless Driving and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.
If you receive a civil citation you should hire a lawyer but if you receive a criminal traffic violation then you’d better hire a criminal defense lawyer.
And if you hire Michael A. Haber, PA then I will do my best to make you a happy client.
