Do I need a License to Operate a Vessel in FL?
No. Unlike for cars, there is no “boating license” in FL. But, if you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, then in order to lawfully operate a motorboat with ten (10) horsepower or more in FL, you must do 2 things: 1) Successfully complete an approved boating safety course and 2) obtain a Boating Safety Education Identification Card issued by the FWC.
Once you have both successfully completed an approved boating safety course and have a FWC-issued Boating Safety Education Identification Card then you must carry the FWC ID and a photo ID with you while operating a motorboat of 10 horsepower or more.
The Boating Safety Education Identification Card is proof of successful completion of the educational requirements and is valid for life.
Regardless of your age and experience all personal water craft regulations and boating safety requirements apply to any and all vessel operators.
You can find Vessel Safety requirements in Chapter 327 Florida Statutes and you can also read the FFWCC’s handy dandy vessel safety guidelines at http://myfwc.com/boating/regulations/ ).
