Public Elementary School Head Custodian Enters 12 y/o Student’s Home and is Arrested for Lewd Act on the Girl in her Bedroom One should never judge a book by it’s cover, unless of course you… Scroll down to read more!

One should never judge a book by it’s cover, unless of course you either subscribe to the school of anthropological criminology” or are Cesare Lombroso himself (that’s Cesare below)…

Cesare lived from 1835 – 1903.  He was an Italian physician turned criminologist who founded the Italian School of Positivist Criminology, and he was the “father” of the concept of “anthropological criminology“, which essentially postulated that one could distinguish criminals from non-criminals merely by looking at them.  Cesare theorized that then-modern-day “savages”, which he called “atavistic throwbacks”, were easily distinguishable from civilized folks by virtue of physical characteristics, such as physical features which were reminiscent of apes, lower primates and “earlier” man (like Neanderthal man).

Cesare mixed / used concepts drawn from physiognomy, degeneration theory, psychiatry and Social Darwinism to essentially theorize that those who “looked the part” (of the criminal) were likely to act the part.   Although his theory was not widely accepted in Europe, for a time anthropological criminology was a hot topic here in the States, and I myself studied it as a criminology major in college.  Enter 56 y/o Jose Coelle, pictured below…

I recognize that it’s not socially, politically, academically, professionally, factually  or in any other way “correct”, but when I read about Coello, and after I looked at his picture, Cesare Lombroso and anthropological criminology“, were the first things that came to my mind.

Coello had worked as a custodian for the public schools system for eleven (11) years before his arrest on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015 for obtaining access to a home with false pretenses, battery, and lewd or lascivious conduct on a twelve (12) y/o girl who attends Cypress Elementary School in Kissimmee, Florida where Coello was the head custodian.

The incident occurred back in May, 2015 but was only recently reported by the young girl.  Per the police:  ‘[The girl] initially was not going to tell anyone about the incident because Jose was always friendly to her in school and an acquaintance of the family”, but then the girl “got depressed recently after seeing the news and thought Jose might target other girls” so she told her parents, who in turn called cops, who in turn investigated and then confronted Coello.

Per the girl, Coello and she were friendly, and he, Coello had visited her family’s home in the past.  This time, Coello walked in without permission, claiming that he had come to her home so as to “check on her”.  Once in the girl’s bedroom, Coello allegedly performed an undisclosed lewd act, causing the girl to yell at him to leave the house, which he did.

During his initial interview with police Coello reportedly did not remember visiting the child’s house on previous occasions, but then he remembered that he had delivered food to the house and had once checked on an air conditioner, but he denied all of the girl’s allegations.  Then again Coello also denied that he had ever been quizzed by cops about his behavior with underage girls in the past, even though the cops had already unearthed a prior 2004 police report in which Coello had been accused of acting inappropriately with a sixteen (16) y/o girl while he worked as a custodian at Gateway High School.  (Can you say “M.O.”… modus operandi?)

Per the 2004 incident report Coello had asked the student some personal questions, had told the girl that he cheats on his wife and also they could get married when she graduates.  After his initial denial, and immediate confrontation with the prior police report Coello claimed that the student referenced in that report had been coming onto him, that she initiated the inappropriate conversation and that he was never charged in that alleged incident.

Cesare Lombroso wholeheartedly believed that you could look at someone and tell if they were predisposed to criminal behavior.  While I don’t agree with that hypothesis I do believe that – allowing for the fact that some people can change, or at least control, some behaviors – past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.
